Architecture Profile

I help leaders understand and improve complex systems where people, workflow, technology, data, policy, and human judgment all have to work together.

I map how systems actually operate, identify where they are breaking down, and design a clearer path from problem to implementation. More than two decades of enterprise product, workflow, UX architecture, systems, and technical implementation experience provide the practical foundation for that work.

Clearer architecture. Better-integrated workflows. Safer automation. Faster decisions. Visible accountability.

Selected Architecture Impact

Enterprise HR transformation — Conducted 75+ interviews across an HR ecosystem serving ~975,000 users and translated policy, operations, ownership, handoffs, accessibility, escalation risk, and automation opportunities into modernization priorities.
AI, data & decision support — Built Qlik dashboards and R Shiny prototypes, integrated NLP outputs into operational workflows, established source-visibility and human-review patterns, and helped bring a RAG-based data assistant through implementation.
Financial systems architecture — Re-architected loan origination, point-of-sale, servicing, refinancing, payments, collections, and title-lending workflows across a shared Angular product ecosystem; a direct manager reported the design/development approach reduced development time by 35%.
Enterprise product ecosystems — Led cross-platform UX and system architecture across Novell products serving more than 10 million users while balancing workflow, administration, security/compliance, and multi-product coherence.
Product & platform integration — Integrated five standalone tools into one platform for K. Hovnanian and built adaptable SaaS structures spanning builders, facilities organizations, government, education, and enterprise environments.
Implementation fluency — Works directly in prototypes and production-adjacent environments to test architecture, resolve implementation problems, and reduce the gap between intended and delivered system behavior.

How I Work

I start by understanding the system that already exists — not just the intended architecture.

Every workaround, delayed decision, ignored handoff, unclear rule, and patched process leaves a mark. Over time, those marks become friction: firefighting, technical debt, duplicated work, brittle tools, and processes that no longer match reality.

Practically, that means listening to the people closest to the work, mapping dependencies, decisions, handoffs, information flows, and technical constraints, then turning what I find into structures teams can build from — solution paths, workflows, integration patterns, interface structures, oversight points, and prototypes.

When systems drift, people end up supporting the system instead of being supported by it. My work restores that relationship so teams can move with clarity, confidence, and momentum.

UX Architect

May 2017–Oct 2020
Softwise · Full-time · Provo, Utah / On-site

Led UX architecture and system design for a suite of financial applications while working directly in the Angular production environment. Connected business requirements, user workflows, data behavior, interaction logic, and technical constraints into a coherent product architecture.

  • Worked directly with developers, business owners, and end users to resolve problems inside the delivery cycle rather than separating design from implementation.
  • Designed and implemented a modular Angular design system that unified interaction patterns and component behavior across multiple applications.
  • Re-architected complex financial workflows including loan origination, point-of-sale, refinancing, payments, collections, and title lending.
  • Co-developed five business-critical applications within a shared component and semantic framework, improving consistency, maintainability, and delivery efficiency.
  • Integrated design review directly into development, surfacing downstream impacts and resolving issues before they became rework.
  • Conducted contextual research and field studies to ensure system logic reflected actual operational behavior.

The resulting architecture connected customer experience, business rules, workflow, and implementation within a reusable system rather than treating UX as a separate presentation layer.

Michael Dages · Staff Product Manager
February 11, 2021, Michael managed Gordon directly
I hired and managed Gordon while I was at Softwise. He was hired to be the principle UX architect of our next generation point of sale system designed for both a web and desktop experience. Gordon tirelessly worked directly with the developers, business owners and end users to design a system that was both user friendly and developer friendly. His design approach decreased development time by 35% as he incorporated a structure where any design changes were completed with in the development cycle so that the developers could utilize the his designs faster with little work on their end. In the end he produced a product that was intuitive, visually appealing and seamlessly worked as a web application and an IOS or Android application all while using a single code base. He designed a product that met the expectations of the users, the business and his boss. I recommend Gordon to anyone looking for an excellent UI/UX designer and would gladly work with him again on any software project / initiative I was involved in. He made everyone's jobs easier and I know he would do the same at any other company he works at.

What Gordon said about colleagues / leaders

Michael Dages · Staff Product Manager
August 15, 2019, Gordon reported to Michael directly
Michael has a unique and powerful vision to see a product's potential, relevance, and value in the industry and directs an efficient development model towards that goal - under Michael's direction, in 3 months, Michael's team prepared a working web application and native mobile application that leveraged the same code base. Michael is a natural charismatic leader who loves people, loves to have fun with them, and leverage his team's natural talents to do so. Michael excitedly encouraged, enabled, and prepared a space for one of his struggling developers to blossom in the office as a Dungeon Master, what started as a one off became 3 Dungeons & Dragons campaigns that became a selling point for hiring developers, that united teams, people, and management to joke, talk, and see each others talents, abilities, and natural leadership.
Thomas Metcalf · Sr. Software Architect
January 13, 2021, Gordon worked with Thomas on the same team
Thomas takes on challenges wonderfully, he is easy to work with, and sees things with an architect's mind set, understanding what is needed before it is requested. His work ethic is top notch and he balances it out with amazing forethought and vision. I've never seen code so stable, modular, and with so little need for refactoring. He is an amazing developer!
Mak Ibrahim · Sr. Software Engineer
December 21, 2020, Gordon worked with Mak on the same team
Mak is fantastic, optimistic, excited and hungry to learn, has an infectious positivity, and he and his work make every team he works on better. He is a quick learner, excited to understand new frameworks, code more efficiently, and is interested in learning from more seasoned developers. We worked on many web applications together, he learned the code quickly, got up to speed with UX patterns quickly, and took over the development easily, accelerating me on to other tasks. He asks great questions and gets to the heart of the matter quickly. I want him on my team and would hire him in a heartbeat.

Matt Hewlett · Web Developer
April 22, 2016, Matt worked with Gordon on the same team
It’s been nice to have a User Experience Expert who knows how to prototype in HTML, CSS, and AngularJS. Gordon designs with responsive design concepts in mind, fully knowing what is possible and what is not, with actual pages written in HTML and CSS, as opposed to a designer who creates mockups in Photoshop or Illustrator (he can design in Photoshop/Illustrator if needed as well). He can add interactions to the designs using AngularJS, which allows decision makers the ability to interact with a prototype, assuring that the design has been vetted and the interactions understood so developers won’t have change request surprises when they hook up webservices and provide the finished product. He encapsulates functionality of his prototype designs into directives for clean AngularJS component organization. Gordon knows how to design and organize CSS with the big picture in mind, with attention to details like minimizing HTTP requests, using sprite SVG’s. He is very focused on the user and understands that software is being created for ease of use by users, and that the success of the product is dependent upon users success in using the product; hence, his influence makes sure that usability is not sacrificed by the design-illiterate, structured data, webservice developers. Gordon would make an excellent addition to your team blending the roles of UX designer and Front-end developer, being able to understand and communicate concepts in both realms.

Gordon is talented, deadline-conscious, and a very fun and pleasing person to work with. I enjoyed our association immensely.
Daniel Christensen · Distinguished Technologist at OpenText
January 23, 2014, Daniel worked with Gordon on the same team
Gordon has this incredible ability to step back from a specific UX interaction and consider the entire context of the interaction to propose the best solution to the problem. Whereas certain designers are content to just tweak colors and pixels, Gordon likes to ask, "Why is the user here?", "What are they trying to do?" and "How can we make it easier or more natural for the user?". As an engineer, Gordon's approach would sometimes force me to rethink (and even re-code) certain interactions but it always lead to a better experience for the user.
